TCE ATAR Calculator — Tasmania Year 12 ATAR Estimator
Our free TCE ATAR Calculator helps Tasmanian Year 12 students estimate their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank based on their Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) subject results. Enter your Level 3 and Level 4 subject scores, and the calculator applies indicative 2026 scaling to give you a predicted ATAR and aggregate instantly.
The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is a number from 0.00 to 99.95 that ranks your academic performance relative to all Australian students in your age group. In Tasmania, the ATAR is administered through the University of Tasmania (UTAS), and external exams contribute 50% of each subject result.
How Is the TCE ATAR Calculated? Step by Step
The TCE ATAR uses a similar process to other Australian states, but administered by UTAS rather than a dedicated Tertiary Admission Centre. Here is exactly how your rank is produced:
Complete Level 3 and Level 4 TCE subjects
You must complete a combination of Level 3 and Level 4 subjects in the Tasmanian Certificate of Education. Level 4 subjects are more demanding and typically attract higher scaling. The minimum for ATAR eligibility is usually 5 subjects at the appropriate level, including English.
School assessment + external exam
Each subject result is a combination of school-based assessment (50%) and an end-of-year external exam (50%). The external exam is marked by TASC (Tasmania Assessment Standards and Certification). External exams are sat in October–November each year.
Scaling is applied to raw scores
UTAS applies inter-subject scaling to adjust raw marks based on the academic ability of each subject's cohort. Subjects like Mathematics Specialised and Physics attract academically stronger students, so their raw marks scale upward. This ensures fair comparison across all subjects.
Best results form your aggregate
UTAS selects your best qualifying scaled results to form an aggregate. The inclusion rules reward students who take additional subjects beyond the minimum, as extra subjects can only help — they will not reduce your ATAR if they underperform.
Aggregate is ranked against the Tasmanian age cohort
Your aggregate is ranked against all ATAR-eligible Tasmanian students in your age group — including those who did not complete Year 12. This ranking produces your ATAR on the 0.00 to 99.95 scale, in increments of 0.05.
Adjustment factors may increase your selection rank
Universities can add bonus points to your ATAR to create a "selection rank" for admission purposes. UTAS and other universities offer adjustments for educational disadvantage, rural or remote location, first-in-family status, and specific subject performance. Always check adjustment factors — they can make a significant difference.
TCE Subject Scaling — Best and Lowest Scaling Subjects
Scaling in the TCE adjusts raw subject scores so that results across all subjects can be fairly compared. Subjects taken by more academically competitive cohorts scale upward; subjects with a broader student base may scale at or below the average. Scaling values change each year.
| Subject | Level | Raw 60 | Raw 70 | Raw 80 | Raw 90 | Trend |

| Mathematics Specialised | 4 | ~68 | ~79 | ~88 | ~95 | ▲ Very High |
| Mathematics Methods | 4 | ~65 | ~76 | ~85 | ~93 | ▲ Very High |

| Chemistry | 4 | ~62 | ~73 | ~82 | ~90 | ▲ High |
| Classical Studies | 4 | ~61 | ~72 | ~81 | ~89 | ▲ High |
| Economics | 4 | ~60 | ~70 | ~79 | ~87 | → Moderate |

| Biology | 4 | ~59 | ~69 | ~78 | ~86 | → Moderate |
| Geography | 3/4 | ~57 | ~67 | ~76 | ~85 | → Moderate |
| General Mathematics | 3 | ~53 | ~63 | ~72 | ~81 | ▼ Below avg |
| Physical Education | 3/4 | ~52 | ~62 | ~70 | ~79 | ▼ Low |
| Applied (Vocational) | 2/3 | ~49 | ~58 | ~67 | ~76 | ▼ Lowest |
Note: All scaled values are indicative estimates based on historical TCE scaling patterns. Actual scaled scores are calculated by UTAS and depend on each year's cohort performance. Scaling changes annually.
5 Strategies to Maximise Your TCE ATAR
- Pick Level 4 subjects where you can genuinely perform well. Level 4 subjects tend to scale higher because their cohorts are more competitive. But a strong result in a Level 3 subject often outperforms a weak result in a Level 4 subject. Choose based on both your ability and the scaling advantage.
- Prioritise your external exam preparation. Because external exams contribute 50% of your final result, they have an outsized impact on your ATAR. Practice past papers under timed conditions — TASC publishes past exam papers and assessor reports.
- Study at least one mathematics or science subject. Mathematics Specialised, Mathematics Methods, Physics, and Chemistry are the highest-scaling TCE subjects. If you have the aptitude, a strong result in any of these provides a significant ATAR boost.
- Include an English subject. English is typically required for ATAR eligibility. Even if English does not scale as highly as STEM subjects, it is compulsory — and a strong English result contributes meaningfully to your aggregate.
- Research UTAS adjustment factors. UTAS and other universities that accept Tasmanian students offer bonus selection rank points for rural and remote location, educational disadvantage, and other equity schemes. These adjustments can lower the effective ATAR you need to gain an offer.
